The region’s strong and diverse employment base stems from its convenient geographic location on the main transport corridor that links Australia’s major cities, and from its rich agricultural and tourism resources. In fact, 70% of Australia’s population lies within a day’s drive of North East Victoria.

The top five employment sectors are in the manufacturing, retail, education, health and professional service industries. The strategic location has attracted many large and international companies which have chosen to call North East Victoria home. From here, products from the region are in use across Australia and around the world. In all, there are more than 45,000 people working in businesses both large and small. Significantly, employment opportunities are expanding across a range of areas including education, tourism, manufacturing, logistics, construction, recreation, personal services and retail.

MANUFACTURERS – Uncle Tobys (800 staff), Bruck Textiles (450), Masterfoods (Pal & other petcare brands, 800), Visy Board (100), Australian Country Spinners (250).
DISTRIBUTION & LOGISTICS – Woolworths Distribution Centre (600 planned) at LOGIC Wodonga.
HEALTH & EDUCATION – Wangaratta District Base Hospital (725 staff), Wodonga District Hospital (600), La Trobe University (200), Goulburn Ovens TAFE (100).
AGRICULTURE & FORESTRY – Carter Holt Harvey (400), Alpine MDF (100).
OTHER – Brown Brothers (250), Big W Wangaratta (135 planned), Murray Goulburn Dairy (130), Border Mail Newspaper (175), Greenfreight (280). A number of other large national transport and logistic companies are located here.
