The North East region is one of the fastest growing regions in Victoria. The region is renowned for its world-class wines and gourmet food, spectacular scenery, cultural heritage and numerous national parks. The region includes Benalla, Wangaratta, Wodonga, Bright, Rutherglen, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham ski resorts.
The North East has a reputation for its pure country hospitality, hosting an active calendar of festivals and events such as the Wangaratta Jazz Festival and the Man from Snowy River Festival. It’s a great place for a healthy family life with bushwalking, fishing, horse riding, sailing and skiing just a small taste of what’s on offer. And for enthusiasts there’s rock climbing, hang gliding and white water rafting.
The regional economy has grown from its agricultural base to one of importance in manufacturing, transport and distribution. The major towns of Wodonga and Wangaratta are the centres of value added production in sectors such as timber, food and meat production. Tourism, service and retail industries contribute significantly to the region’s economy. The area’s natural attractions including parks, forests, rivers and lakes offer great potential for eco tourism.
Local councils in the region actively promote economic development to establishing businesses. They also keep pace with changing community needs, offering prompt attention to building permits and excellent community services.
