The Geelong, Otway and Hinterland Region is located in Victoria’s south-west. It covers an area of 8,946 square kilometres and takes in the major centres of Geelong and Colac, the coastal towns of Angelsea, Apollo Bay, Lorne, Ocean Grove, Queenscliffe and Torquay, and the inland rural centres of Winchelsea and Bannockburn.

The Region consists of five municipalities:
• Borough of Queenscliffe
• City of Greater Geelong
• Colac Otway Shire
• Golden Plains Shire
• Surf Coast Shire.

In 2003 the Geelong Region provided 241,000 residents and 6,000,000 annual visitors with a vibrant environment to live, work and play.

Factors driving this growth are:
• A highly attractive lifestyle
• An internationally renowned physical environment
• Access to a sophisticated range of modern services
• Access to quality education
• Unparalleled leisure activities
• and Easy access to Melbourne.

The Region also encompasses a unique, diverse and beautiful environment. The Region is privileged to have an environment rich in natural wonders including coastal locations, picturesque State and National parks, inland waterways, wetlands and significant elements of natural and cultural heritage.

In 2002, a Region-wide cooperative approach commenced to develop the Geelong Region Strategic Plan. This alliance of five councils has adopted the name G21.
