Food and Wine The region has a developing gourmet food and world class wine sector, with many restaurants, cafes, cellar door and farm-gate outlets showcasing the food and wine produce of the region. The southern part of the Region produces 75% of Australia’s trout. Other areas are well known for its cheese, olive products, gourmet potato varieties, and berries, particularly pick-your-own strawberries and raspberries. Many restaurants, cafes, taverns, cellar door outlets throughout the Region are now showcasing the food and wine produce of the region. Successful Farmers Market’s are held monthly that attracts a variety of food and wine produce throughout the region. Established and Emerging Industries A diverse number of opportunities exist in the region for those seeking work. From highly skilled viticulture or equine opportunities to more mainstream agribusiness industries and professional sectors, Goulburn River and Ranges is a small region with big opportunities. The Region supports a strongly established and rapidly expanding tourism industry, with its abundant natural attractions and recreational opportunities. Business conferencing and adventure tourism are two emerging tourism industry sectors. Agribusiness is also a major economic driver for the region with opportunities for both traditional broad acre grazing farming and an emerging intensive agriculture sector including viticulture, stone fruit, berries, olives, turf production, mushrooms, pig farming and aquaculture (particularly trout). Other industries include an established forestry and value adding timber processing sector, as well as light manufacturing and food processing sectors. The Region also boasts the Horse Capital of the State with a strongly supported and expanding Equine industry. Together these industries provide opportunities for both high-skilled, low-skilled employment. Low cost, fully serviced industrial land to cater for the needs of small to medium businesses is available near to the main townships. Local Wineries throughout the industry are producing some of Australia’s best wines. A number of these developments have embraced new technologies resulting in ecologically sustainable development. |
