Businesses Transport and Logistics Border Express "“Where we are now, we have land to expand so once we fill this one we will be looking to build a second one of 7,500 square metres.” " When Albury-based Border Express needed land to build a logistics warehouse they looked across the Murray River to Wodonga’s new LOGIC industry hub. LOGIC occupies 440 hectares of industrial land adjacent to the Hume Freeway and the Melbourne-Sydney rail. It’s an ideal location for manufacturing, distribution and warehousing to operate 24hrs a day. Border Express will initially build a 7,000-square-metre warehouse opposite Woolworth’s massive distribution centre that has eight hectares under one roof. Albury general manager Geoff Luff said they needed warehousing to supplement their transport business. (Geoff works in the company with his brothers Grant, Mark and Jon under their father and company founder, Max. Border Express has depots in all capital cities and runs about 300 trailers and employs over 600 people). "We saw the opportunity with the Wodonga Council opening up over there and attracting a lot of business. If we were going to build something we should build where business is being attracted. We felt that LOGIC was going to grow very quickly. Where we are now, we have land to expand so once we fill this one we will be looking to build a second one of 7,500 square metres," Geoff said. Warehouse manager Andrew Wickham described the facility as purpose-designed with electronic and radio-based systems and a focus on the interface between warehouse and distribution and different modes of transport. "We can track where goods are stored, where are they due to go to and which truck will they go on." Andrew said. "Outside the building, the importance of infrastructure is paramount including rail siting, 24-hour access, B-double trailer access to the site and the close proximity to highways." Geoff said Albury-Wodonga was a prime location for transport and distribution because of the number of manufacturing businesses in the area. "We can now offer them a complete service - wrap, pick-up, load, pack and distribute. One-supplier service right through. So while we’re here because we grew up here, for a regional area it’s probably a bigger manufacturing area than most other regions in Australia. "There’s a skilled workforce drawing on people from places like Wangaratta, Beechworth, Yackandandah, Chiltern and Corowa. And if we want to get our city fi x, we jump in the car at seven o’clock in the morning and we’re in Melbourne by 10.15am." |
